Property Sets – A Smart Way to Manage Massive Product Variants

If you have ever managed a store with many types of products—clothing, digital gadgets, drinks, and more—you know that each product often comes with its own set of variants. Think of sizes, fabrics, materials, volume, grades, and beyond. Each unique variant needs a separate SKU to ensure proper inventory tracking.

On some platforms, like Shopify, you can add custom variants with different names. But this flexibility leads to complications and mess. Meanwhile, other platforms (like Woocommerce) might not even provide a proper standardized approach to variants and SKUs. The result can be a tangled mess of inconsistent variant names, complicated filtering, and no real standardization across your store.

Common Problems with Traditional Variant Management

    • No global standardization: Without a standard approach, your store’s variant naming and structure can differ wildly from one product category to another. This inconsistency can ruin the browsing and filtering experience for customers.
    • Complex management: When variants are managed in a completely free-form manner, keeping them organized becomes a real headache. You have no single, uniform way to structure or reorder them.
    • No native ordering of variants and their values: Want to ensure that size variants appear in a particular order like XS, S, M, L? Without a standardized system, you might need custom templates or external tools to achieve this.
    • Multi-variant products become messy: Handling products that combine two or more variants—like a T-shirt with size and color—becomes complicated and prone to errors or confusion.
    • Data export and migration nightmares: Without a standard structure, exporting your variant data or migrating to another platform can be frustrating and time-consuming.

    How Selldone Solves These Issues

At Selldone, we have introduced two core innovations to simplify and standardize variant management:

    1. Global Variants: We provide six global variant placeholders that can fit almost any product type. By starting with a predefined set of universal variants, we ensure that all products have a consistent structure from the beginning.
    2. Property Sets: On top of the global variants, you can create Property Sets. These sets let you rename and visually customize the variants for specific product categories while still maintaining an underlying standard.

    Setting Up Your Global Variants

We highly recommend sticking to the default names for these six global variants because they have been carefully chosen to cover almost all products. However, if you want to tailor them, you can do so easily by visiting your Sho Dashboard, then going to Setting > Theme > Variants.

The six global variant placeholders are: Color (Recommended to always represent color), Style, Volume, Weight, Pack, Type

Keep the names simple and globally valid. Why? Because you can always customize them later using Property Sets. For example, you can treat the default Volume variant as Size or Length, and the Weight variant as Portion or Scope. The goal is to keep a universal naming system that you can refine as needed.

How Property Sets Work for Variants

Property Sets let you define pre-made variants and icons for the six placeholders to better match the specific category of products you are selling—be it clothing, drinks, food, or anything else. To create a new Property Set, go to Logistic > Property Sets and click on Add New Property Set.

Within the Property Set, you can:

    • Give it a title and description for reference by your team.
    • Rename each of the six global variants to something more appropriate for a particular product category.
    • Assign icons to make the variants visually distinct.
    • Leave any variant name blank to use the default global value.
    • Drag and drop variants to change their order. This order will be reflected in the product page variant selector that customers see.

How to Make Variant Values Orders Like Sizing Xsmall, Small, Medium, Large?

If you want certain variant values to always appear in a specific order (like sizing with XS, S, M, L), Selldone has you covered. In your Property Set, you can add predefined values for each variant. This not only helps you maintain a standard order but also speeds up the process of adding new products.

With predefined values in place, when you create a product variant, these suggested values appear right away, making the process of building out product variants quick and consistent.

Assigning a Property Set to Your Products

Once your Property Set is ready, you can assign it to any product by going to Product Dashboard > Edit > Profiles section > Property Set. Pick the appropriate Property Set and your product will immediately inherit the naming, icons, and order you defined.

You can also access this option directly through Product Dashboard > Inventory. Click on the top right menu (visible once you enable at least one variant) and select the appropriate Property Set.

With your Property Sets and global variants in place, your product variants will be clean, consistent, and easy to manage. Filtering and browsing become more intuitive for customers, and you’ll have a much simpler time maintaining order across your entire inventory.
